Getting to Know Zoe

What a surreal day.  Zoe is with us.

She is very quiet and reserved, trying to figure out what's going on.  But when she's distracted by new sights and sounds we can see her personality start creep out.  I no longer have to rely on a piece of paper and a handful of pictures to guess what she's like.  I'm starting to know who she is.

Here's what we know so far:

She likes to play games even when she's shy about it. Blinking games and hiding games top the list.  She has fantastic hearing out of her right ear (she has no left ear).  She's captivated by magical glowing boxes we call tvs and computers with Skype.  She loves the mirror.  I mean LOVES the mirror.  She can walk while holding your hand, but just one hand because Miss Independent can do it herself.  She likes her back rubbed.  She sleeps on her side.  She has the tiniest, sweetest cry.  She loves things that rattle.  She in fact does love some soft toys despite the fact that we were told specifically she does not.  She is scared of the bath.  Very, very scared.  Singing "Jesus Loves Me" gets Mommy the first official Zoe snuggle. She talks in her crib as she's falling asleep.

We're learning each other.  It will take a long time to figure each other out and build that trust relationship.  But it's starting.  We made amazing progress in just 11 short hours.

  4. I so enjoyed reading your blog, Laura, and seeing the pictures of your beautiful new daughter! I am so glad she is warming up to you and Eriek so quickly. I had to stop and dry my eyes so I could continue typing. Adoption is a magical gift from God. Enjoy every minute of it!
